Reimagining Packaging Solution Refreshed look and reengineered packaging structure

A commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company, is dedicated to developing and commercialising innovative, lifesaving, and life-altering treatments for patients with rare immunological conditions. As they continue to expand their product portfolio, maintaining high standards of packaging that ensure product stability and longevity is paramount. One of their products required a packaging redesign to address several critical issues, prompting our engineers and designers to collaborate on a comprehensive solution.

The Challenge

The existing packaging faced multiple challenges:

  • High Production Costs: The current packaging was costly to produce, primarily due to the materials used and the involvement of multiple CMOs, with production sites spread across different geographical locations.

  • Stability and Longevity: Ensuring the product's stability and safety over an extended period, especially under refrigerated conditions for up to 24 months, was crucial.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Meeting regulatory standards while providing a fresh, premium look was essential.

Our Approach

To address these challenges, our team developed three alternative packaging solutions, each tailored to meet the client's specific needs. Our engineers and designers worked together, ensuring a holistic approach to the redesign by thoroughly understanding the specific requirements and constraints.

Each packaging solution was engineered to ensure the product could be securely and safely stored for up to 24 months under refrigerated conditions. We provided materials and structural designs certified to withstand these environments. Additionally, we focused on cost-effective production techniques and materials, significantly reducing overall production costs without compromising quality or safety.

Sustainability was a key focus in our designs. We incorporated eco-friendly materials and streamlined processes, minimising material diversity to reduce the carbon footprint and aligning with the client's commitment to environmental responsibility. The final design also featured a new packaging trade dress that looked premium and addressed regulatory concerns. This fresh, new look enhanced the product's market appeal and ensured compliance with industry standards.

The redesigned packaging offered better UX, making it more suitable for transportation, storage and easier for healthcare professionals to handle securely. Our user experience improvements provided enhanced support for the vials, ensuring they remained stable and easy to access.

Improved stability, reduced costs, ensured compliance and enhanced UX

Outcome

The final packaging design successfully met all of the client’s requirements. The product could be securely stored for the required 24 months under refrigerated conditions, ensuring efficacy and safety. Production costs were significantly reduced, improving financial performance. The redesign also reduced the carbon footprint, supporting sustainability goals.

The updated trade dress provided a fresh, premium appearance while meeting regulatory requirements. Additionally, the new design offered a better user experience, with improved support for the vials and ease of use for healthcare professionals and patients.

In conclusion, our new design solutions effectively addressed the client's challenges, delivering a packaging redesign that improved stability, reduced costs, ensured compliance, and enhanced user experience.
